Robotic Surgery

The Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System is used for total hip reconstruction, replacing permanently damaged or diseased cartilage and bone with a customized hip implant.

Usually, this procedure is reserved for patients suffering from non-inflammatory or inflammatory degenerative joint disease (DJD). Some of the more common forms of DJD include:

• • Osteoarthritis (OA)
  • Post-traumatic arthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
  • Avascular necrosis (AVN)
  • Hip dysplasia.

Through the use of a CT scan, the system creates a 3D rendering of your knee or hip. This serves as an accurate guide for the surgeon as they reconstruct these essential joints.

By making smaller incisions and preserving more healthy bone and soft tissue around the joint, the Mako system provides your surgeon with a clearer picture of the surgical site and a safer procedure.

Just like the method for robotic-assisted hip replacement –– listed above –– the Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System is utilized for total and partial knee replacements.

With the Mako System, your surgeon uses a CT scan to create a 3D model of your knee. This imaging allows your surgeon to create an accurate implant that fits snuggly into the space of the damaged bone and tissue being replaced. Your surgeon will reference this model throughout the procedure and make adjustments when necessary. It is this model that serves as a surgical game plan and helps the surgeon guide the robotic arm to the correct position when inserting the implant. The Mako System also keeps the surgeon within planned boundaries, helping ensure the operation remains exact and error-free.

At Midwest Orthopaedic Center, our surgeons perform four types of knee replacements. In each of the following instances, the patient’s needs determine the method of the surgery:

• • Biocompartmental –– a total knee replacement in which the doctor reconstructs the internal compartment of the knee as well as the kneecap
  • Medial –– a partial knee replacement in which the doctor performs a reconstruction of the inside compartment of the patient’s knee joint
  • Patellofemoral –– a partial knee replacement in which the doctor reconstructs the front-facing portion of the knee joint.
  • Lateral –– a partial knee replacement in which the doctor reconstructs the outside portion of the knee joint.

For spine patients, the Mazor X Surgery Stealth Edition robotic guidance system assists surgeons when performing targeted procedures on the back, neck and spine.

The Mazor X system is used to treat:

• • Degenerative disk disease
  • Scoliosis or curvature of the spine
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Adult or pediatric conditions or injuries requiring reconstructive surgery

Through 3D imaging, real-time visualizations, in-depth planning capabilities and extensive safeguards, the Mazor X Stealth Edition shrinks the chances of complications, limits residual pain and increases the opportunity for a healthy rehabilitation.
