Peoria, Illinois (March 28, 2019)—Patrick O’Leary, M.D., adult and pediatric spine surgeon with Midwest Orthopaedic Center, is the region’s first physician to offer minimally invasive spinal surgery using the latest robotic technology.
Dr. O’Leary is trained in the use of the Mazor X Spinal Robot, now available at UnityPoint Health – Peoria, to provide precise and minimally invasive placement of spinal implants. Dr. O’Leary says the Mazor X system is transforming treatment for patients suffering from debilitating back pain or limited range of motion as a result of spinal conditions including scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, herniated disc, and other complex spinal deformity cases.
“This is a game-changer,” explains Dr. O’Leary. “Mazor X Robot technology lets us create a precise and unique plan for each patient prior to surgery. The minimally invasive procedure results in a quicker recovery time and less pain for the patient.” During surgery, the system also helps reduce radiation exposure from imaging for both patient and physician, as compared to traditional back surgery methods.
Currently, pediatric and adult spinal fusions are eligible procedures for the Mazor X Spinal Robot at UnityPoint Health. But Dr. O’Leary adds, “Mazor X Robot technology is continuing to evolve. As more applications are developed, Midwest Orthopaedic Center will keep pace with the advances to remain on the forefront of spinal surgery in our community"
Midwest Orthopaedic Center is the only medical practice in Central Illinois that offers expertise in all orthopedic sub-specialties, as well as comprehensive physical therapy/rehabilitation services and diagnostic imaging. It is also home to Midwest Ortho First, the area’s only walk-in clinic for orthopedic injuries. Formed by the merger of two Peoria orthopedic groups in 1999, Midwest Orthopaedic Center today serves Central Illinois with locations in Peoria and Pekin.
